Breakfast or lunch at Luisa’s feels a lot like sitting in an Italian family kitchen. Warm and bright, savory smells coming from the cooktop, friends and family gathered around conversation and the anticipation of a delicious, comforting meal. Good food is the ultimate expression of caring for most Italians, and owner Vivian May is no exception. Although the café menu isn’t exclusively influenced by her Italian heritage, her commitment to using simple, nutritious, best-quality ingredients from producers she trusts is. Vivian’s ‘family’ of customers will tell you her time-tested recipes and attention to detail make all the difference.
Primetime on weekends can be busy, but don’t let that discourage you. Adjoining Harbert Swedish Bakery, led by Vivian and her mom (Luisa!) is a comfortable place to wait and enjoy a classic pastry treat.
Local Tip: In summer, the café fires up an old wood-burning oven out back. Moved from Italy and re-assembled by the family, the pizza it produces is incredible. Thin and cracker crisp with savory combinations of farm-fresh ingredients. Take it to the beach for some Mediterranean magic. Available for pickup only, orders are taken by phone for a few hours each day.
