A RARE CLIMAX FOREST INLAND OF THE DUNES

A National Natural Landmark, Warren Woods’ 3.5 miles of trails guide hikers through a rare climax forest and sleepy river floodplain. Featuring silvery smooth beech maple as tall as 125’ and up to 5’ in diameter, this is one of our most stately and hushed hiking spots. Birders enjoy the river trail in spring, made even more lovely by the seasonal groundcover of wildflowers.

Because of the towering canopy here, each season offers a unique experience. We especially love the filtered light and wildflowers of spring, brilliant fall color, and serene soundscape of winter. Summer offers a nice respite from sun and heat, but it can be buggy! Definitely pack your mosquito spray during those months.

Local Tip: The Elm Valley entrance has a small parking lot. Parking at the Warren Woods Road trailhead is roadside. Keep a sharp as you approach so you don’t miss it.
