Care for mind, body, & spirit by the shores of Lake Michigan
When it’s time, you can feel it.
You need more than a break, but a long, luxurious pause. The kind that lifts body and mind away from the laptop and leads to a gentler, more centered part of yourself and the world.
If your moment’s arrived, Harbor Country is here for you. Where Lake Michigan beaches meet old-growth forests and rolling pastures, you’ll find a community of skilled spa, movement, and wellness practitioners. With care and intention, they offer uniquely ‘here’ experiences in one of nature’s loveliest shoreside sanctuaries.
Try them all, or even one, to feel cared for, rested, and closer to yourself.
Foundation Spa
Luxurious treatments in tune with nature
At Foundation Spa in the Harbor Grand Hotel, your quietly luxe journey begins in an intimate lounge, as comfortably appointed as a plush apartment. Designed by Chicago’s Curioso studio to mirror the lakeshore’s serenity, the space is an all-season window into New Buffalo Harbor: boats pass in summertime, snow flutters by in winter.
Nature inspires the area’s most comprehensive menu of intuitive massage, body treatments, and facials, too. Foundation’s highly trained team uses delicately aromatic, naturally derived products and add-ons by Voya, including hand-harvested seaweed from the Irish coast. It’s a detail that goes above and beyond, which is what the Foundation experience is all about. Come early to float in Harbor Grand’s saltwater pool and hot tub, in a modern indoor solarium. Spa guests have 90 glorious minutes of pre-treatment access.

Skybird Yoga
Movement & sound in a century-old barn
In this airy barn-slash-yoga-studio, you can hear crickets chirping by the pines as you sink into downward-facing dog. Tucked away in the woods off a curving country road, Skybird’s picturesque location and floor-to-ceiling views aren’t even the main draw. It’s founder Elizabeth Nuti, an expert practitioner whose genuinely encouraging, warm style draws in devoted fans, with drop-in visitors from Berkeley to Brooklyn. Elizabeth’s an expert in a wide range of yoga and movement modalities, including power flow, gentle flow, and tune-up yoga. The vibe is mellow and welcoming, whether you’re a first-timer or a regular. Check ahead for special sessions, including a live sound bath and intensive breathwork class that’s mind-alteringly good.

Inner Freedom Farm
Healing with the herd
As you walk through the hilly pastures with Elizabeth Carden, you’re not exactly sure what will happen next. At her Inner Freedom farm, that’s the point. Elizabeth is the area’s only trained practitioner in Equine Guided Empowerment, a practice that invites people to observe and interact with horses as a vehicle for insight and healing. It begins with setting intentions, out loud or to yourself. Then you wander into the fields, where four gentle mustangs and two friendly donkeys are just living in the moment. As you stand and watch, they begin to interact—often, to us humans, in surprisingly profound ways. It’s a mysterious, memorable, and open-hearted encounter. Check for special events on the farm: Elizabeth is a trained Reiki Master and collaborates with High Low Tarot, artists, and yoga teachers to expand and enrich the herd experience.

At Harbor Grand, you’re in one of those exceptionally comfortable places where everything is taken care of—and you’re free to just relax. And when it’s time for dinner and drinks, the hotel’s Terrace Room restaurant serves hand-made pastas, somm-curated wines, and a harbor view. Bring one of the hotel’s blankets and cocktail to a lounger by the water, and you’re wrapping up a perfect day in.
